This past Friday night we made our yearly trip to the Wyoming County
Speedway for the RoC 75 lap event. It was a race that was originally
schedule for June but Mother Nature postponed the event to August 13th.
The Perry, NY track has not been very kind to the MPL Motorsports team
in years past but this year we survived for a strong top 5 finish.
Our night got off to a good
start by placing our Northeast Industrial Technologies Troyer in the all
important redraw for the 75 lap main event. The top 12 qualifiers
redrew and we got starting position number 5. When the green flag
dropped we quickly moved up to the 3rd running position and started to
conserve our equipment for when they paid the money at the end of the
race. We continued to run solidly in the top 5 until the caution came
out on lap 45. At this point with 30 laps to go in the race, crew chief
Jeff Deminck, called the number 25 pit side for a new right rear tire.
The entire field came in except the top 3 running cars. Rear tire
changer Rick Knapp did a great job with the tire swap and got us out of
the pits first. This quick pit work enabled us to restart the event 4th
on a new right rear. When the race resumed the cars chassis was very
tight and it was quickly evident that the new right rear tire was not
coming up to the size we wanted. After about 5 laps or so the car would
take off and was among the fastest on the track but numerous caution
flags were making things difficult on our MPL Motorsports team. We
wound up finishing in the 4th position, a very strong run at a
notoriously difficult track.
“I am happy to come out of
here with a top five finish” said Mike Leaty. “This place is not one of
our stronger tracks but we ran good here tonight. After the pit stop
the car was just tight to make a run at the front three. After five
laps or so the car was perfect and we would chase them guys down but
then another caution would come out. I want to thank Jeff Deminck for
coming on board tonight and crew chiefing for us and the rest of my guys
that have been doing a great job all season long in the pits. It was
this hard work that really helped us here tonight. It really was a
total team effort”.
The team now
sits 5th in the RoC points standings with 4 big points races remaining.
This Sunday night the MPL Motorsports team will be traveling to
Shangri-La 2 Speedway in Owego, NY for a 100 lap event. On August 28th,
we will be taking a break from the RoC tour and visiting Dunn Tire
Raceway Park for their Tony Jankowiak/Tommy Druar 100 lap special
event. We then return to RoC action at our home track, Spencer
Speedway, on September 3rd for another 100 lapper. It will be a busy
few weeks but we will be looking to return to victory lane in at least
one of these events coming up. Thanks for checking in on our progress
here at
www.MikeLeaty.com and we hope you can make it out to some of our
upcoming events.
