When things don't go your way....
It was Mr. Auto Parts night at Spencer Speedway Friday night which
meant I wanted really bad to run good for one of my best sponsors.
Unfortunately things would just never go our way no matter how hard we
tried. In the heat race we had a terrible
right front tire on the car which made the car super tight. No matter what
I did the thing would not turn. We finished 8th in the 9 car heat which
kept us out of a qualifying spot! I wound up starting the feature but it
was way back in the 15th position for the 30 lap main. This is not too far
from where we normally start our Wayne Regional Orthopaedics/Rochester
Steel Treating car anyhow so I was confident we could keep our string of
strong runs going.
At the start of the green flag I settled in and
thought I was going to just ride the beginning of the race out and let
things settle down. I moved ahead of a couple of slower cars but that's
about as far as I got. The car was extremely loose....exactly the opposite
of what we had in the heat. I had nothing for any of the top running cars
and basically settled into about 10th place. With ten laps to go contact
from behind sent me spinning off turn three. This was sort of a blessing
in disguise as it enabled us to come in for some adjustments and a new
right rear tire.
That was exactly what we needed because we marched
to the front once the green dropped again. I passed a car or two a lap and
with two to go got to the inside of the 5th place running car. Once again
luck was not on our side as he tried to block the lane we came together
and he spun out. I was still running 5th but the track decided to put me
to the back for "causing" the yellow.
It was clear now that it was not our night. I got a
couple of positions back when we went green for the last two laps but only
could manage a 12th place finish. We are now four points out of the point
lead. This week we were supposed to run our third RoC race of the year at
Lancaster Speedway Thursday but we have decided not to race there because
of our strong points position at Spencer Speedway. We will be racing
Friday night though for the typical 30 lapper at Spencer Speedway again.
