WEEK #1, WIN #1
Throughout my racing career I had never finished a opening night! That is
why we took a very cautious approach going into opening night at Spencer
Speedway. This all changed in a big way when we brought the Wayne Regional
Orthopaedics/Rochester Steel Treating car home in victory lane.
The night started off good with a solid
2nd place finish in the first heat which allowed us to start 3rd in the 30
lap feature. The first 10 laps of the race went by fast and the top two
leaders were setting a very fast pace. I decided I would play it smart and
settle into third and run my own race to try and save my tires. It paid
off on about lap 10 when the yellow came out and grouped us back up.
On the re-start the top two cars got
together which sent the 2nd place car of Buck Catalano down the track and
right square into the side of my car. It did very little damage to the car
but knocked the tow out just a little. Both of us continued on but I was
now back to fifth. This is when the night started going our way.
The top five cars broke away from the
rest of the pack. First the 66 off Tim McMullen, who was leading, broke
something in the motor to move us up to fourth. Next Patsy Catalano, the
2nd place car was spun out to move us up to 3rd. With ten laps to go I was
third but had what I felt to be the fastest car on the track. When the
door opened to take second from Todd Smith I did so with ease and now had
my sights set on the leader who was again Buck Catalano. Buck had been
very aggressive earlier in the race and had definitely worn out his right
rear tire.
With around five laps to go he drove it
too deep into turn three and made a huge slip up the track. From that
point on it was clear sailing to victory lane. It was a well deserved win
for my entire crew who has worked so hard over the winter months to make
me look good. I knew all week since practice I had a good car, and it is
nice to go out and win right off the back.
This upcoming weekend we have a double
header with a race at Spencer again Friday night and then the Shampine
Memorial at Oswego Speedway Saturday night. Thanks for checking in on my
website and we hope to keep the ball rolling this weekend with two
consistent finishes. -Mike Leaty |
